Window Cleaning Tips

Proper Window Cleaning Techniques for a Streak-Free Shine

August 19, 2019

When it comes to household cleaning, a few chores seem to always need some attention. Vacuuming can keep the floor clean for days, but window cleaning is a whole different story. Wipe the window down for a few minutes, and streaks might still be showing. Even worse, microfibers might be stuck to the window. Even after a second or third go-around, things still might not be streak-free. If you find yourself struggling with a messy window, even during and after cleaning, follow these techniques for a streak-free shine to your home’s windows.

Streak-Free Window Techniques

Start with Cloth, Soap, and Water

Streaks are annoying, but a dirty window often builds up grime and gunk first. To achieve a great, shiny window, start with a simple cloth, soap, and water. By cleaning the window of its residue, the streak-free glass you desire is going to come a lot sooner. Skipping this step is common for those who dive in right away with a liquid window cleaner. Without soap and a good scrub, dirt and grime sink break down into smaller materials and sink into the glass. That makes the subsequent steps much harder to manage.

Squeegee the Soap Away

Squeegees are often thought of as a gas station tool, but you need one around the house. Soap is not going to just disappear from your windows, so you’ll need to push it away yourself. A squeegee does a great job at removing the soap without scratching or dirtying up the glass once more. It’s also very easy to use. Simply start in the middle and swipe towards the sides of the window.

Dry the Window of Any Leftover Moisture

To ensure there’s nothing left on the window but shiny, gleaming glass, make sure to dry off the window. Paper towel and cotton cloths are going to leave something behind as you dry. Think back to those tiny white particles left by even the best paper towels. Instead, make sure to use a microfiber cloth. If you used the squeegee correctly, the leftover water and soap should be at the edges of the window, meaning you should not have to make grand swipes across the glass again. If there’s still a good amount of anything in the middle of the window, go back to the last step once more.
