How Long Do Windows Last?

April 29, 2022

Windows are a staple on every home and provide it with a lot more energy than you think! Installing windows in your home is always a beneficial venture, but the process comes with a lot of questions. Much of these questions will revolve around the type of window you want installed and the benefits they offer, but there’s a far more important question you should ask first. How long are these windows expected to last? A window’s longevity should be one of the first things on your mind when you go to purchase one. We go into more detail about a window’s lifespan below!

Window Material

The lifespan of a window can actually differ based on a few important factors. This means that no two windows will likely have the same longevity! The first thing to take note of is what material the non-glass parts are made of. Windows are far more than two panes of glass; they contain a lot of hardware as well, which can be made of a variety of materials. Wood and clad window frames tend to be the strongest for your dollar, lasting upwards of 20 years. Aluminum windows are a little bit sturdier and rust-resistant but also come with a much larger price tag.

Climate

Depending on where you live, your windows will likely experience a lot of inclement weather conditions. This is especially true if you live in any coastal areas, which New England is very noteworthy for! Depending on how much moisture your windows receive, the frame could begin to rot from the outside and require replacement earlier. If you live in a drier climate, this issue is still possible but less persistent. This is especially true if you have wooden window frames, as they are more susceptible to water damage.

Lifespan of the Glass

While the two above factors play a significant role in the quality of your windows, the most telling sign of needing to replace your windows revolves around the lifespan of the glass. Many window companies offer a 15-20 year warranty on their windows. This number isn’t made up; most window manufacturers agree that you should start to think about replacing them once you hit the 15 year mark. If you’re regularly maintaining them, they could last beyond 20 years, but once you start to notice the signs of your windows aging, it might be time to think about new ones.
