How To Child Proof Your Windows

September 24, 2021

Your windows are some of the most important features of your home. They can help with your home’s insulation, bring natural light into any room, and even help block out some unwanted outside noise! However, if you have children, your windows could actually pose a danger to them! Children could climb around on the windows and seriously injure themselves, so it’s important to know how to child proof your windows. But, what are the most effective ways of doing so? We break it down for you below!

Install Window Guards

Have you ever used a baby gate to keep your children out of rooms that they shouldn’t be in? There’s actually a similar product out there for windows! They attach to your window frame and act as a shield between your kids and the outside world. These aren’t to be confused with bug frames; those can keep bugs out, but aren’t strong enough to hold the weight of a toddler. Window guards are also sold in a variety of sizes that can fit on most windows, so it’s an easy investment to keep your kids safe!

Install Cordless Blinds

If you have blinds that use a pulley-like system with a cord to raise and lower them, it may be time to rethink that! These cords can act as choking hazards for small children, as it is easy for them to get tangled up in them. As an alternative, you can install cordless blinds instead! This design has a small handle on the bottom of the blinds that you can use to lower or raise them. They also eliminate the choking hazards of corded blinds.

Install Window Stops

Another helpful thing that you can add to your windows to child proof them is window stops. These can be installed on your windows regardless of what direction that they open in. They essentially stop your window from opening any further after a certain point, usually around 4 inches. Whenever small children are present in your home, your windows shouldn’t be opening further than that anyways. Like the other methods, this protection method can be installed on most windows.
