Patio Door Maintenance Tips

January 25, 2022

Your home’s exterior has a lot of little parts that you’ll want to keep in check to prevent any lingering home issues. The windows in your home aren’t the only thing that provide it with insulation; your doors play a role here, too! Patio doors especially do a great job of bringing in natural light, working on a similar scale that your windows do. In order to ensure its proper functionality, you’ll need to do some regular maintenance on it. We give you the best tips for patio door maintenance below!

Tracks and Rollers

Proper patio door maintenance starts with taking care of the tracks and rollers that allow the door to open and close. If these aren’t properly maintained, you’ll have a much harder time opening your patio door later down the road! Start by cleaning out any debris from the tracks and scrubbing them down. Once that’s finished, you’ll want to add a slight amount of lubrication to the tracks to ensure that they don’t get stuck midway through opening the door. This may involve moving the door off of them to ensure that each area gets equal attention.

Inspect The Locking Mechanisms

While patio doors don’t provide the same level of security that entry doors do, it doesn’t mean that their security isn’t important! You’ll want to inspect your locking mechanisms every month for signs of wear and tear. If the screws are loose, they can easily be tightened, but damage to the lock could warrant the services of a locksmith. In order to prevent damage to your locking mechanisms, take care when you open your patio doors. You shouldn’t be forcing them open or closed.

Glass Cleaning

While this is less for functionality and more for appeal, cleaning your patio door’s glass routinely will ensure that the shine never dimmers. Clean glass will allow for more natural light to come into your home as well! You shouldn’t just use any standard cleaner and method to clean glass, however. There are products out there that are specifically meant for cleaning glass (look for things like window cleaner) that will be the most effective at getting the job done.
